Parking Solutions on the Horizon for Uptown Metropolis

/ WMOK

When WMOK spoke with Metropolis Mayor Don Canada in May for his first Coffee Break as mayor we discussed the current parking challenges facing Metropolis’ Uptown Market Street area.

When we spoke with Mayor Canada in June he advised that plans were underway to purchase property from a local resident and that the purchase would allow the city of Metropolis to add parking to Uptown Metropolis.

The purchase of the property located at 604 and 608 Pearl St. was approved for $41,000 with the usual and customary closing costs at the most recent Metropolis City Council meeting.

The property is located at the corner of Sixth and Pearl streets.  It is roughly estimated as of now that the parking area will hold around 50 cars – making way for many more shoppers on Market Street.

When WMOK spoke with Mayor Canada in August he advised that things are moving right along with transitioning the two Pearl street lots into Uptown Metropolis Parking.

Canada told WMOK that the city will soon be removing the grass from the lots, putting down rock and beginning the foundation.  An engineer firm has been hired to advise on the costs of paving.  Canada said they hope to have it done sooner than later, but they are having trouble finding a contractor”

Mayor Canada reiterated during our discussion, “We really appreciate the young lady who sold us those because she’s gonna be helping the city out for a long time with those two lots.”
