Massac County Commissioners Pleased with Outcome of Courthouse Annex Sale

/ WMOK

When WMOK spoke with Jerel Chiders, Massac County Commissioner on Tuesday morning he told us about the sale of the “old Banterra Bank building/Courthouse Annex”.  The building was given to Massac County by Banterra Bank in Fall of 2014 with the contingency that it had to stay in their possession for 3 years before being sold; however upon the sale – the county would be allowed to keep the money from the sale. The sale was approved for $416,000 by Commissioners Childers and Jeff Brugger during a special-called meeting on May 21. Commissioner Jayson Farmer was absent.

The Southern Illinois Center for Independent Living is the new owner.  Commissioner Childers told WMOK that the new owners are a community-based, nonprofit and non-residential facility offering a variety of services to persons with disabilities and their families.

During the reconstruction of the Massac County Courthouse, the old Banterra building was used to house some of the offices that normally operated in the courthouse. Upon completion of the renovations and the offices moving back into the courthouse, the building was able to be put up for sale.

Lots 7-9 were donated to Massac County by Banterra in 2019.  The same contingency applies – the county must possess the lots for three years before selling.
