Metropolis Rotarians and Kiwanis are in need of donations toward the Annual Academic Awards

/ WMOK

Metropolis Rotarians and Kiwanis have faced many challenges with the Academic Awards and Spaghetti Scholarship Supper which generally takes place at this time of year.  The event has taken place for the last 36 years and benefits Senior high school students in Massac County.

In 2020 the Kiwanis and Rotary Club of Metropolis were unable to proceed as normal with their annual Scholarship Spaghetti Supper due to COVID-19.  This had a major impact on fundraising activies for the year – as did the cancelation of the 2020 Superman Celebration and the 2020 Fort Massac Encampment. The Annual Spaghetti Supper has been a wonderful fundraiser for the clubs for the past five to six years and it usually brings in anywhere from $8,000 to $10,000 in donations for the scholarship fund.

With things still out of the norm approaching this years’ event they decided they would have to do something different to honor the upcoming graduates from Massac and Joppa High Schools.  This year for the first time ever – the applications for the scholarships were available online to any qualified student.

When we spoke with Dan Huffman of Metropolis Kiwanis earlier in April he advised that only about half of the normal amount of applications have been received. Although having the application available online to students seems to be going in an effective and efficient way.

As the Spaghetti Supper can’t be held this year amid the pandemic, the groups are in need of donations to the scholarship fund this year. The Spaghetti Supper in the past had been a major help!  All donations from the Suppers went to the scholarship fund along with other small fundraisers normally held with the also cancelled Superman Celebration and Encampment.

To donate to the Scholarship Fund – send donations towards the scholarship fund you can send a check to the Southern Illinois Community Foundation 1800 W Boulevard Marion, IL 62959 Checks should be made out to SICF and you should include a note – Massac County Scholarship Fund.
