August 14th is National Social Security Day. It’s also the day in 1935 when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law.
What Is Social Security:
- Retirement income: A monthly check that replaces part of a worker’s income when they retire or reduce their hours. Eligibility is based on work history, and most jobs withhold Social Security taxes from paychecks to fund these benefits.
- Disability Insurance (SSDI): Provides financial support to people who are disabled.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI): For some individuals 65 and older who have limited income and resources.
- Survivors benefits: Helps families when a spouse or parent dies.
12P – The Rotary Club of Metropolis meets every Thursday at Community Christian Church, 1150 Country Club Rd.
