IDOT receives federal grant for work zone safety

IDOT will receive nearly $1 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help improve work zone safety. The funding comes from the first round of grants totaling more than $94 million through the new Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation Grants Program.

Established by President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the competitive program provides state, local and tribal governments $500 million over five years to leverage technology to create safer, more equitable, efficient and innovative transportation systems. The funding will support a diverse array of topics and communities, from projects to improve transit reliability to smart traffic signal technologies, smart grid projects that will help prepare for more widespread adoption of electric vehicles and more. Illinois’ $979,500 grant will go to work zone safety.

“This funding will be used to identify work zone planning and activity data sources in Illinois, and to develop procedures for the standardization of data and unification of a data source that can be used by IDOT to improve reliability and resilience, and by outside services and users to provide real-time, reliable information to road users to improve safety and mobility,” said Highway Safety Programs Unit Chief Juan Pava. “Better management of work zone activity data is imperative to relay accurate information of the status of the roadway system to road users. A robust and reliable data source is invaluable in measuring the performance of the system and allowing for data-driven identification of issues and systematic solutions.”
