Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse – Fentanyl and Spring Break

/ WMOK

Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse told WMOK during a recent Coffee Break that overdoses have been plentiful this year.  Masse said that since the first of the year there have been approximately 7 overdoses and 3 fatalities county-wide related to what is believed to be fentanyl.  Masse stated that some of those may have been accidental in that while they were taking a drug they had obtained illegally – they did not realize it was laced with fentanyl.

The Metropolis Police Department has gone through 3 boxes – which is six units – of Narcan since the first of the year.  Masse said all of those individuals survived.

Masse said that a recent fentanyl seizure in Metropolis was the largest of its kind since he has been Chief.

Masse cited concerning examples of college students who think they’re taking Adderall so that they can stay awake and cram for their exams – only to succumb to an overdose when the pill is laced with Fentanyl.

Masse wants to encourage parents to have a serious conversation with students who are about to embark on Spring Break about the dangers of pills improperly obtained.  In addition Masse warns parents to give some thought to where they will allow their traveling youngsters to travel this year as many travel alerts are in place.
