Make Memories and Record Family History This Holiday Season
As family gatherings begin for the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Holiday season we hope that you’ll make time to not only make some great memories – but look at the holidays as a time of year to capture family stories and history.
We offer a few simple tips to get things started:
*Make it a game – go around the room and have everyone answer such questions as “What was your first vehicle?” “What was your first job and how much did you make an hour?” We suggest recording this for later review by the family historian. A simple app to use is called “Voice Recorder” and can be found in most app stores.
*Make it a talk show – Put your eldest family members in a group – preferably in front of a video camera – and have them tell stories about Thanksgivings and Christmases past, family traditions and memories of family members long gone on.
We hope you have an amazing Thanksgiving, Christmas and Holiday season and hope that you’ll join us weekday mornings for lots of local banter and upcoming events – as well as a big push for spending with our local merchants as we enter the holiday season!
Notable Individuals
from Metropolis and Massac County
As we have covered the unveiling of the John Marvin Steele sign our minds have wandered to other notable figures in our local history.
Local Historian Bob Lingle has shared with us during his Coffee Break visits the story of the Weaver sisters (Jean, Joanne and Betty) who played for the Fort Wayne Daisies during the last years of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League
Most recently when Metropolis Mayor Don Canada joined us for Coffee Break he shared with us that Dr. Orlando McReynolds has approached the council to recognized other individuals born in Metropolis – Oscar Micheaux, regarded as the first African-American filmmaker to produce and distribute feature films and Annie Turnbo Malone considered to be one of the first African American millionaires in the country for successfully developing hair and marketing products in St. Louis, Missouri.
We’ve begun to gather our materials on these individuals and their contributions to create a new section of our website, “Notable Individuals from Metropolis and Massac County”.
If you would like to submit an individual for the project please send the details of their notoriety along with any pertinent links or photos to wmoknews@frontier.com
