City of Metropolis requests the assistance of property owners in identifying the type of service line running to their home’s internal plumbing

The City of Metropolis requests the assistance of property owners within the city in identifying the type of service line that they have running to their home’s internal plumbing.

There are four types of piping: Lead, Copper, Galvanized and Plastic.

The information is needed following a Federal Government mandate that requires the City of Metropolis to identify where Lead services are located so that they can begin the process of eliminating them.

Lead unlike other drinking water contaminants – is usually not present in the drinking water source. It results from the distribution system or on-site plumbing itself. Lead gets into water at the tap when water corrodes lead in pipes, fixtures and solder.

The most impactful way to reduce the risk of exposure to lead in drinking water is to remove the lead service line that brings water to homes from the water main in the street.

To report to the City of Metropolis what type of water service line you have visit their website www.metropolisil.gov – scroll down to “Resources for Residents” and click “Lead Service Line Survey”.

Today is International ShakeOut Day!  International ShakeOut Day is being observed today! It has been observed the third Thursday in October since 2008.

The Great ShakeOut earthquake drills are based on scenario earthquakes that could effect the area if they were to actually take place. Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills are an annual opportunity for people in homes, schools, and organizations to practice what to do during earthquakes, and to improve preparedness. These events are made possible through a collaboration between several agencies including the USGS.
