Snake Road – Shawnee National Forest Closes Snake Road for Fall Migration

Wolf Lake, IL—The bi-annual closure of Forest Service Road No. 345, also known as Snake Road, to ensure safe crossing for all species of snakes and amphibians moving to the limestone cliffs from LaRue Swamp has been underway in Shawnee National Forest since the first of September.

The 2. 7-mile-long road closes each year from September 1 through October 30 to allow snakes and amphibians to migrate from their summer habitat in the LaRue Swamp across the road to their winter habitat in the limestone bluffs.  Closure periods are sometimes extended due to present observations and weather. Though the road is closed to vehicles, it is open to people traveling on foot.

Check out the new Snake Road video about the area and how to prepare for your visit.

Today is National Pledge of Allegiance Day – National Pledge of Allegiance Day was proclaimed by George H.W. Bush, in August of 1989, after Congress passed a resolution designating its establishment. The day takes place on September 8, marking the anniversary of the day the Pledge first appeared, in 1892, in The Youth’s Companion.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). It was originally published in The Youth’s Companion on September 8, 1892. Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country.

In its original form it read:

“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

In 1923, the words, “the Flag of the United States of America” were added. At this time it read:

“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words “under God,” creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy’s daughter objected to this alteration. Today it reads:

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
