WMOK heard from Massac County Highway Department Director Joe Metesevic regarding the road closure that began this morning on Unionville Road at the bridge that is approximately 1/4 mi from the Pope County line.
Metesevic advised WMOK that the road is expected to be closed for approximately 4 months. The steps to completion will continue later this week when the project enters the bidding process. Following that a contract will be put in place and after that the chosen contractor will begin the work on the project.
Metesevic told WMOK that the current bridge will be demolished and a new one will be built.
The reason for the immediate closure of the bridge is the condition of the wood piling. It has been rotting for sometime and during the last inspection by the Illinois Department of Transportation Bridge Office earlier this year it was decided that the wood piling had deteriorated enough that it needed to be closed.
Metesevic will join us for WMOK’s Coffee Break on Friday 6/17/22 so that we can get the details on alternate routes, timeframes and more.

The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook Statement for our area. Today and Tonight – Excessive Heat Warning and Heat Advisory headlines are in effect for the area.

Tuesday through Sunday – Excessive Heat Warning and Heat Advisory headlines are in effect for the area through Wednesday. Refer to the products for details. Maximum afternoon heat index values will range from 100 to 105 Thursday. A slight chance of thunderstorms is forecast Thursday and Thursday night mainly over southwest Indiana and west Kentucky.

Excessive Heat Warning is in effect until Wednesday at 8PM. Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 110 to 115 this afternoon, 105 to 110 on Tuesday afternoon, and around 105° Wednesday afternoon. Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Overnight lows will only fall into the mid 70s to around 80, providing little relief.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Today is Weed Your Garden Day! Weeds can inhibit garden plants from growing, as they compete with them for sunlight, nutrients, and water. A weed can be defined as anything that wasn’t purposely planted but began growing anyway. A weed may be an edible or medicinal plant, and may even be a flower. Weeding should be done on a daily basis, but on Weed Your Garden Day, an extra five to ten minutes of weeding should be done.
