The Metropolis Fire Department released the following information via Facebook   They have had a few reports of Mobile food Vendors operating in the city without a permit. The Metropolis Fire Department asks that Vendors keep this in mind should you operate or want to have a food truck at your event or property.

The City of Metropolis currently permits food vendors to operate on private property in accordance with Ordinance 2012-12. Vendors offering to sell to the public, un-sealed, prepared foods that may be consumed either on or off the vendor’s premises first shall apply for a Local Food Vendors license. Applications should be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office. A link to the ordinance and an application for the permit can be found on the City’s webpage www.Metropolisil.gov under the permits and licenses section. Also, those who wish to set up pop up tents for the sale of merchandise, good, etc. Like the free phone tents we see occasionally, those persons/entities are required to obtain a transient vendor permit as well.

WMOK spoke with City of Metropolis Mayor Don Canada earlier this year regarding provisions that have been made for food trucks to visit our city. During an earlier Metropolis City Council meeting, a vendor license was approved and it would allow a food truck or similar type vendor to acquire a yearly license at the cost of $25. This would allow vendors to sell within the city. Mayor Canada advised WMOK that the $25 fee is for protection of everybody that eats out of said food truck, to make sure that everything is sanitary and healthy, and it ensures that the vehicles have insurance, and it requires vendors to show their health license.

For vendors wanting to bring their food trucks to Metropolis, they need to go to the fire department and the fire department will check to make sure the vendors have a fire extinguisher and that the vendor is doing everything they are supposed to do. Vendors then go to the City Clerk’s office in the Metropolis City Hall to pay the vendor license fee.

The $25 vendor license will be good for the length of one year at each renewal allowing the vendor to come in to Metropolis and then they make their own arrangements with the powers that be wherever they’re going to set up for example in the parking lot of one of our businesses.

Today is National Crayon Day!

National Crayon Day is a day to celebrate the invention of crayons along with the joys of creative expression. Europe was the birthplace of the “modern” crayon, a man-made cylinder. The first crayons were made of a mixture of charcoal and oil. Later, powdered pigments of various hues replaced the charcoal in many early 19th century products. It was then discovered that substituting wax for the oil in the mixture made the sticks sturdier and easier to handle.

In 1903, cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith (the founders of Crayola) developed their own line of colorful drawing sticks for young artists by combining paraffin wax with non-toxic, kid-friendly pigments. Binney & Smith then coined the company name Crayola by combining the French word for chalk, craie, with the first part of oleaginous, the oily paraffin wax used to make the crayon. Many other American companies have produced many varieties of crayons.

The diversity of crayons is also like the diversity of people, personalities, character, color, and beauty. The crayons, like people are amazing and unique. Along with having their own WOW factor, crayons have distinct smells, colors, brightness, dullness, thickness and thinness. They can be straight, or bent, or even round. People- they have gifts and talents, ideas and dreams. That diversity helps each one of us standout in a beautiful way.

Fun facts about Crayons:  The rarest Crayola crayon color is “C-Rex” from 2003. The first Crayola boxes were sold door to door. Each crayon has three languages on them and they are English, Spanish, and French. The first eight pack of crayons was sold for five cents. More than 200 distinctive colors have been produced in a wide variety of assortments. There are the standard colors, and then specialty crayons such as fluorescent, metallic, silver swirls, magic scent, gem tones, glow in the dark, crayons with glitter, and the list goes on. Crayons have also been created to represent the wonderful diversity of skin tone. Crayola produces around 12 million crayons per day.
