Sunday Morning Burglary Leads to Pursuit, Crash and Multiple Charges for Metropolis Man

The chase that ended on West 10th street in Metropolis on Sunday morning began with an alarm at the Dollar General located at 1502 West 10th Street in Metropolis at approximately 2:51 am on Sunday, February 13, 2022.   Metropolis officers responded to the alarm to find that a glass door had been kicked in and cell phones and other items had been taken.  Officers recovered video and other physical evidence from the scene.

 

Later on Sunday morning at approximately 5:15 am, Metropolis 911 received a call of a bomb threat at the US Post Office in Metropolis.  According to dispatchers the caller rambled for the most part and didn’t make sense but did make accusations against different agencies.

 

During one of the calls the subject admitted breaking into the Dollar General and it was at that time that Metropolis Police began pinging his phone.

 

A Massac County Deputy assisted in searching the area and a White ford pick-up truck was located near 2nd and Yasoda.  A traffic stop was attempted and the offender fled.  A pursuit was initiated which moved throughout the mid-town Metropolis for around 15 minutes at times with speeds reaching above 70mph.

 

Spike strips were deployed at 10th and North Ave., resulting in the front two tires been deflated – however the pursuit continued until the 1500 block of west 10th (US 45N).  The chase was terminated when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole head on.

 

Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse advised that the offender, Justin R. Lewis, 34, Metropolis was taken into custody and transported to the Massac Memorial Hospital for treatment. Upon his release he was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center. Lewis was charged with Burglary, Theft, Criminal Damage to property, Making a bomb threat, Aggravated fleeing /eluding police, aggravated assault, reckless driving, and speeding in excess of 35 mph over the limit. The preceding information pertains to an arrest made by the Metropolis Police Department. This arrest was made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
