Brookport Mayor Rance Phillips Talks About the Harry Statham Gymnasium Renovation Project and It’s Benefits to the Massac County Community

/ WMOK

When the Brookport Mayor, Rance Phillips joined WMOK recently for Coffee Break he told us a bit about the Harry Statham Gymnasium Project and how it got started.

Mr. Phillips said the project has been going on for 5 or 6 years. Phillips advised that the City of Brookport, in years past, had plans to tear down the facility.

Mr. Phillips along with several other community members decided that they were going to try and save the building. They went through series of meetings and a series of actions and obtained the building.

Brookport Mayor Rance Phillips stated when they obtained the gym, parts of the floors were rotted and the windows were out and there were many more issues that needed to be addressed. “The whole idea was to make a facility for the kids to use and the community to use. It started out to save the old high school gym. It turned into a whole lot more and it’s been a Godsend to the community, as far as bringing people into town. The whole goal is to make it better for the kids.”
