Understanding the Role of Guide Dogs: Essential Guidelines for Interaction – International Guide Dog Day (April 30th, 2025)

/ WMOK

Guide dogs play a crucial role in enhancing the independence and mobility of individuals with visual impairments. These highly trained animals help their handlers navigate safely in various environments, breaking down barriers to accessibility. When interacting with guide dogs, it’s important to follow these rules:

1. **Don’t distract them**—Always avoid petting or calling the dog while it’s working.
2. **Ask before approaching**— Always ask the handler for permission to interact.
3. **Respect their space**— Keep a safe distance from the working guide dog.
4. **Avoid feeding them**— Never give food without the handler’s consent.
5. **Stay calm**— Remain quiet and respectful to minimize distractions.

By understanding these guidelines, we can support and respect the partnership between handlers and their guide dogs.
