Bubble wrap was invented in 1957 by Alfred W. Fielding and Marc Chavannes in Hawthorne, New Jersey.
Originally designed as a textured wallpaper, it found its true purpose as a protective packaging material.
By the 1960s, bubble wrap became popular for shipping fragile items, offered by Sealed Air Corporation, which Fielding co-founded. Its lightweight structure and cushioning properties revolutionized packaging, leading to its widespread use in industries worldwide.
Bubble wrap is celebrated not just for its utility but also as a source of stress relief and fun.
In 2015 a bubble wrap was introduced that does not “pop”. More on that here.
