We’ve been discussing goals and new routines heavily at WMOK as we’ve approached and begun the new year.  Based on that, a few suggestions for setting up a dog walking routine.

A 4-Week “Walk Your Pet” Graduated Plan

Since January can be chilly, the goals should start very small to prevent fatigue or injury.

Week Goal Calendar Entry Why this works
Week 1 The “Dress Rehearsal” “Put on walking shoes & leash dog” Builds the habit of getting ready without the pressure of distance.
Week 2 The “Mailbox Sprint” “Walk to the end of the drive” Establishes a clear, visible finish line.
Week 3 The “Neighborhood Hello” “5-minute walk (2 houses down)” Introduces light cardio and social interaction.
Week 4 The “Full Loop” “10-minute walk” Solidifies the routine as a permanent daily task.

Safety & Success Tips

  • Weather Checks: In January, safety is the priority. If it’s icy or below a certain temperature,an “Alternative Goal” on the calendar, such as “Indoor Hallway Lap” or “Hallway Fetch.” *

  • The “Dopamine Hit”: Check off the task immediately after coming inside. Seeing a string of checkmarks is a powerful motivator.
