(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Officer Roman, the Animal Control and Abatement Officer for Metropolis, has raised alarms about the critical capacity level of the pound.
When WMOK’s Kim Comer spoke with him this week on Wednesday morning’s Coffee Break program, Roman said the facility is reaching capacity with 16 of its 20 slots filled, leaving little room for additional rescues at a time when the need is dire. Roman wants desperately to see the dogs adopted as he has never had to euthanize them due to space.
Compounding the issue, Officer Roman reported a troubling outbreak of Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) within the facility, posing serious health risks to the already vulnerable animals.
Roman told WMOK that after returning from a few days off, four more dogs had been added to the pound that he has yet to process.
Roman’s capacity issues leave him urging the community to think about adopting pets and to report any cases of neglect or abandonment. This would greatly help address the urgent challenges facing the pound and surrounding areas like Brookport, where there have also been reports of stray dogs.
There are several adoptable dogs at the pound, including pit bulls and pit mixes, a boxer mix, and a heeler mix, as a few examples.
