WMOK News – Metropolis, IL – Earlier this year WMOK spoke with Metropolis Fire Chief Micah Tolbert about how to prepare for a safe Fall and Winter.

Here are some key points from our discussion on heating safety and maintenance before the cold weather sets in:

It’s important to contact a chimney sweep to clean and inspect your fireplace. Additionally, scheduling a maintenance check with an HVAC technician for your furnace is strongly recommended. Be aware of vacant properties in the cities that may attract individuals seeking shelter during colder weather.

Chief Tolbert addressed the use of space heaters, stating that while they have their place, it’s crucial to ensure they are equipped with an automatic shut-off feature in case they are tipped over. If a heater does not have this feature, it should be replaced.

He also emphasized the importance of having 10-year battery smoke detectors and the proper placement of these devices in your home. Furthermore, Chief Tolbert shared insights on safety tips for holiday decorations.
