(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Massac County Unit 1 Superintendent, Jason Hayes has long talked with WMOK about the negative effects of Chronic Absenteeism in the learning and development of students.
Chronic absenteeism can significantly hinder a student’s educational progress and overall development. When students miss school frequently, they miss out on essential learning opportunities, which can lead to gaps in knowledge and skills. This absence disrupts their understanding of key concepts, leading to lower academic performance and decreased engagement in the classroom. Additionally, students who are chronically absent may struggle to form relationships with peers and teachers, further isolating them and negatively impacting their social and emotional development.
Hayes advised that the battle continues with chronic absenteeism, though there have been improvements.
Hayes tells us that the district had 283 chronically absent students in November. That can be compared to 322 in November of 2023 – and 447 in 2022.
