Pt. 2 - Mayor Canada And Abatement Officer Roman Discuss Abandoned And Dilapidated Properties 8.15.24 WMOK - Metropolis

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Metropolis Mayor Canada and Metropolis Animal Control Officer John Roman joined us recently to discuss the condition of some properties in town and what’s being done to improve the landscape.

  • Mayor Canada: Costs, Expenditures and legality regarding demolishing vacant properties
  • Issue of non-local ownership of abandoned properties and possible solutions
  • Mayor Canada: Started this project with 40 or 50 properties that needed to be addressed.  Now at 5 properties.  Many lots are now empty and back on the tax roll with hopes of new construction.
  • Officer Roman: 9 properties in the city that are regularly recurring on his abatements.  Ownership is either deceased or owned non-locally on most if not all.  Discusses properties that are sold “sight unseen”.   Speaks on the difficulty of delivering information on homes with deceased ownership.   “These properties are an expensive nuisance.”
  • Mayor Canada: Mayor Canada discusses a specific instance in Metropolis with a man living in a tent in a yard, which is against Metropolis City Ordinance.  ((WMOK will revisit this specific item next week will newly garnered information from Officer Roman))
