Mayor Canada Addresses Flooding Issues During Recent Torrential Rains 7.18.24

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL –  When Metropolis Mayor Don Canada joined WMOK for Coffee Break last week, he revisited the torrential rains we experienced earlier in the week and the flooding throughout Metropolis.

Mayor Canada explained that the current state of the water system in Metropolis makes this flooding unavoidable when rains are falling so quickly.  Canada advised that water generally begins pooling in the James Drive area – the water travels through Hospital Edition and under Adkins to the railroad tracks – behind Marberry and to the sports park to the creek that carries it to the river.

Canada told WMOK that the water system is probably over 100 years old and that the age of the system is the reason the water-sewer separation project began.

Phases one and two of the water-sewer separation are complete.

As our conversation continued Mayor Canada went further in-depth regarding the water-sewer separation project and upcoming infrastructure work to be done in Metropolis.  We will continue to bring you this conversation in this week’s WMOK News Check Yellow Sheet.
