(WMOK Metropolis, Il) – Metropolis Public Works Director Natalie Harris advised WMOK this morning that a two-week road closure for resurfacing will begin today.

The affected road is Devers Road which runs between Super 8 and Acee’s Food and Fuel.

Director Harris recommends using Alexander Lane and Lindell May Lane as a detour.

Please plan your route accordingly and expect the closure to last approximately two weeks.

Closures on Wednesday in Observance of Juneteenth

(WMOK Metropolis, Il) – Juneteenth, observed on June 19, marks the day in 1865 on which over 250,000 enslaved people in Galveston, Texas received news of their emancipation, marking a significant milestone in American history.

“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.”

This pivotal event commemorated the birth of what became known as “Juneteenth,” a verbal shorthand for June 19.  It is also known as “Freedom Day,” “Juneteenth National Independence Day,” or “Emancipation Day.”

Juneteenth celebrations originated as a tradition among formerly enslaved individuals and their families after the Civil War starting in Texas.  Activities included religious services, storytelling, singing, games, and BBQs. A symbolic tradition was discarding enslavement garments into a river, representing freedom.

Juneteenth celebrations spread to other states and in recent years, gained national attention recognizing its significance in America’s commitment to human freedom and equality.

State government offices, schools, and libraries will be closed in observance.
