Today Is

National Department Store Day

National Department Store Day, celebrated every year on October 16, honors the significance and impact of department stores in the country. Department stores are commercial retail establishments that sell to customers directly. Unlike normal retail outlets, department stores classify and display a broad array of products as per department. For example, a department store will have separate sections or departments dedicated to fashion, furniture, appliances, foodstuffs, and so on. These stores fuel and support the American economy.

Extensive Car Chase Fills Metropolis with Sirens on Monday Morning

(Updated 10.17.23 6am) (WMOK) Metropolis, IL – WMOK spoke with Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse regarding a chase that took place throughout parts of Metropolis on Monday morning with speeds reported via scanner traffic as high as 60mph.

The event began when the Massac County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a domestic on US 45.  While attempting to locate – the subject was located by Metropolis Officers in Fort Massac State Park at which time they initiated a stop.

The subject fled through Metropolis at excessive rates of speed – 12th street, 8th street, 6th street – the scanner traffic advising of location was so rapid that we could not have possibly updated it on Faceb00k here in the WMOK newsroom.  We quickly went to live updates on air and advised motorists in Metropolis to pull off of the street and park until the danger had ended.

Chief Masse advised that the fact that they did not know if the passenger was being held against their will created great urgency in stopping the vehicle.

The car chase ended at 3rd and Pearl streets when a Metropolis squad struck the rear of the van which forced it into the curb causing tire damage.

The subject then fled on foot and was caught after being tased.

Jeffrey Blevins,28, Clarksville TN was charged with aggressive fleeing and eluding, aggravated reckless driving and suspended driver’s license.

Chief Masse told WMOK that Blevins was wanted on a parole violation warrant out of Kentucky for a drug charge as well.

WMOK followed up with Massac County Sheriff Chad Kaylor late Monday afternoon and he confirmed that Blevins remains in custody on a Kentucky warrant.

Join Metropolis Police Department for National Drug Take Back Day

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL –

National Drug Take Back Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 28, 2023, and your Metropolis Police Department is proud to host this important event.

In collaboration with the Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition (McDAC), Representative Patrick Windhorst, and Senator David Fowler, we aim to address the pressing public safety and health concerns associated with unused medications in households.

Leaving medicines unused for extended periods can make them susceptible to misuse and abuse.

To combat this issue, we encourage you to bring your unused medication to the front lobby of the Metropolis Police Department at 1020 Broadway St., Metropolis, IL.

Our dedicated team will be available from 10 am to 2 pm to receive your medications and ensure their safe disposal through incineration.

By participating in National Drug Take Back Day, you contribute to the well-being of our community.

Together, we can prevent accidental ingestion, abuse, and environmental harm caused by improper medication disposal.

Join us on October 28th and help make our neighborhoods safer.

The Massac County Farm Bureau Farmers Market Has Ended for the 2023 Season

... But you can still find our farmers locally until their season ends

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – The Massac County Farm Bureau officially ended the weekly Farmers Market at Dorothy Miller Park in late September – however local farmers will continue to make their produce available to the community until their growing season ends.

A popular spot for Massac County farmers to make their good available to the community is what many know as the “former Clark School lot” on East 5th Street.

Mr. Verbarg has told WMOK that he will set up on that lot throughout the end of his growing season.  He currently has apples as well as other produce and recently told WMOK that he will soon have turnips.

All Massac County farmers are invited to let us know at WMOK what produce you have available and when/where your goods will be available.

Illinois and Beyond

LIHEAP Program Available to Assist Southernmost Illinois Residents with Heating Expenses

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible low-income households pay for home energy services (primarily heating during winter months).

Energy costs can place severe and continuing stress on a family’s budget. In some instances, households are forced to make painful decisions regarding which bills to pay and which necessities to survive without.

Illinois residents with a household income that does not exceed an amount determined annually by the Department of Commerce are eligible.

Annual eligibility levels are determined based on available funding and may not exceed 200% of the federal nonfarm poverty level.

Reese’s $25,000 promotion may violate sweepstakes laws

Reese’s may be in violation of state and federal laws with its new sweepstakes offer currently advertised on packs of peanut butter cups.

The promotion on two-cup packages reads “You could win $25,000” and, in smaller print, “See details inside.” But only after consumers have bought and opened a package can they see the small print: no purchase is necessary to enter the sweepstakes.

The Reese’s contest was first reported Monday by Edgar Dworsky, a consumer advocate and former assistant attorney general in Massachusetts, who runs the Consumer World website.

Overwintering Rosemary: Growing Rosemary Indoors - How to Keep Rosemary Alive During the Winter

Find out how to overwinter rosemary and grow rosemary indoors to keep this wonderful herb growing all year!

A reader’s question about overwintering rosemary reminded me that it was something I wanted to write about. I have had mixed results with rosemary plants over the years, but after killing a few I think I have finally gotten it right.

Every fall, at least one person heading south for the winter will come to me with plants that they can’t bear to let die. I am a sucker for a beautiful plant, so if I have the room I usually say yes. I have gotten some remarkable plants that way—jasmine, streptocarpella, orchidsgeraniums, begonias, and rosemary.
