Massac Memorial Wellness Wednesday 9.13.23

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Dr Adam Connell joined WMOK this morning for Wellness Wednesday.  Dr. Connell’s practice is psychiatry and he is located at the Massac Memorial Hospital Integrated Healthcare Clinic.

Dr. Connell said that one big factor in mental health is the stigmas that often surround it – which he is glad to see decreasing in younger generations.

Connell likened addressing one’s mental health with vague ‘advice’ such as “shake it off” to advising someone to “walk off a broken leg”.

He discussed symptoms of depression and anxiety – such as insomnia, losing interest in things you have once enjoyed and feeling drained.  He said the symptoms often present as ADHD.  Eating changes are often noted as well.  The most severe end of the spectrum would be thoughts of self harm and not wanting to exist.

Dr. Connell also addressed directly folks who are feeling symptoms of depression.  He said that letting it go unchecked will allow it to become worse.

We also asked Dr. Connell to address listeners who may have someone in their proximately who is displaying signs of depression.
