A word from the WMOK News Room:

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – After a round of storms moved through Massac County this morning we were left will multiple power outages throughout the area – including at WMOK.

WMOK spoke with Metropolis Public Work Director Natalie Harris following the storms and she advised that there are multiple power outages throughout the city.  In addition Harris advised that there were power lines and poles down on North Avenue in the vicinity of Cedar Lane.  Trees were reported downed on Old Marion Road as well.

Massac County Emergency Management Director Brian Horn has kept us updated on things in the county today.  When we spoke with Director Horn he was at North Avenue and Korte Road in Metropolis blocking traffic due to the downed power lines on North Avenue.  He advised that there was a swatch of that area without power.

All city and country crews are aware of outages and continue to survey damage.

Massac County Youth Fair Continues Through the Weekend

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Tammie Wiseman Obermark joined us at WMOK last week to give us to the details surrounding the Massac County Youth Fair which began on Friday at the Massac County Fairgrounds.  The Massac County Fairgrounds are located on Korte Road in Massac County – between Massac High School and North Avenue.

Sew It, Grow It Show It

The Massac County Fairgrounds experienced flash flooding during this morning’s storms – though not to the extent of yesterday.
Massac County Youth Fair President Tammie Obermark advised WMOK that the fairgrounds are extremely muddy following this morning’s storms.  To avoid any vehicles getting stuck they ask that you ONLY park in the gravel parking lot.  They PREFER that you park at Massac County High school. There will be 2 passenger trams that will shuttle everyone back and forth to the fairgrounds.  The exhibit hall will be open from 5-8p!

A Simple Trick for Remembering When To Use ‘Who’ vs. ‘Whom’

In casual messages with friends or water cooler conversations with colleagues, it might not seem particularly important to use perfect grammar—and saying whom can sometimes make an exchange seem formal in a way that doesn’t match the situation. But there are still plenty of instances when perfect grammar is necessary, like emails to the CEO of your company, published works, or telephone talks with your persnickety relatives.

For those times, Lifehacker has a nifty mnemonic device to help you remember when to use who vs. whom. In short, mentally swap out the who or whom in your sentence with he or him. If he sounds right, you should use who. If him is the obvious winner, go with whom.

Clint Howard: ”Ron’s shadow is a pretty cool place to be”

When two siblings occupy the same professional space, we tend to look for a Cain and Abel narrative. It’s so fun to read about sibling rivalry because it’s an experience most of us can relate to. Mom and dad had finite approval to dish out; the competition was sometimes fierce. That’s why when we look at two actors who are brothers, we might expect to read the details of their heated contention. Sometimes, though, a story is great because of how unexpected it feels. That’s the case with Clint Howard’s career, which ran parallel to brother Ron’s but left no room for resentment.

In five episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, Clint Howard played Leon, a neighbor kid a few years younger than Opie. Clint and Ron Howard would continue to share projects throughout their careers. Clint was on Happy Days with his brother, and Ron directed Clint in movies like CocoonSplashParenthoodApollo 13, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. And while Ron may have had a higher-profile acting and directing career, Clint Howard has been working consistently for sixty years. Frequently, those roles are fantastic.

WMOK Yellow Sheet Reader Poll #1 - WMOK News Listening Habits

The WMOK News Check has been covering Metropolis and Massac County news for decades.

In the beginning – 1951 – folks listened on 920am

In what we estimate to be the 1980s the WMOK Yellow Sheet was first produced.  The “Yellow Sheet” was a sheet that could be picked up throughout Metropolis at area businesses.  It contained Metropolis and Massac County News.

As technology allowed – an email subscription list was developed for the “Yellow Sheet”.  That list continued to grow from the 1990s when it first began and though we are in a transition phase with that list – we continue to take subscribers – email wmoknews@frontier.com and put “Yellow Sheet” in the subject line.

We added a “text subscription” option in June of this year.  We invite to you to text “Yellow Sheet” to 618-524-9209 to subscribe.

Entering a new era – now nearly 72 years after our station first took to the airwaves in Massac County, we want to get a vibe on how our current consumers gather news from WMOK so that we can continue to improve your experience.

We’ve included a few options below with which we hope to learn how you “most often” get your WMOK News – Please pick any options that apply to you.

Tornado damage to Pfizer plant will probably create long-term shortages of some drugs hospitals need

The fallout from a Pfizer factory being damaged by a tornado could put even more pressure on already-strained drug supplies at U.S. hospitals, experts say.

Wednesday’s tornado touched down near Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and ripped up the roof of a Pfizer factory that makes nearly 25% of Pfizer’s sterile injectable medicines used in U.S. hospitals, according to the drugmaker.

Pfizer said all employees were safely evacuated and accounted for, and no serious injuries were reported. The drugmaker is still assessing damage.

As in 2023, a key issue for both the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild then was residuals — artists wanted a bigger cut of the feature films that had been sold to TV along with health benefits and better working conditions.

In 1960, the crumbling infrastructure of the Hollywood studio system was shaken by a one-two strike launched by two essential branches of its workforce — the writers and the actors. Since neither job description was yet considered on the cusp of obsolescence, management was forced to negotiate with labor and reach an accommodation. Both sides had incentives to real a deal that shared the wealth and kept the shop floor running. In the end — and this might be the sad difference between 1960 and 2023 — they saw each other as collaborators rather than mortal enemies.
