JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: INDEPENDENT LIVING SPECIALIST
STATUS: FULL TIME (minimally 30 hrs./weekly)
RESPONSIBLE TO: PROGRAM DIRECTOR
DESCRIPTION: The Independent Living Specialist is responsible for assisting persons with disabilities to receive appropriate services, which will enable them to live more independently. Develop contacts and provide services to consumers in SICIL’s service area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Conducting intake and assessments of consumers seeking independent living services.
Respond to I & R requests received by phone (voice or TTY), written request, or in person, and to provide information and make referrals in a timely manner.
Provide orientation to Independent Living Philosophy and I.L. services to individual consumers and the community.
Provide the five core services: Information and Referral, Advocacy, Peer Support, Independent Living Skills Training and transition services as assigned by the Program Director
Maintain an understanding of the needs of persons with disabilities and what resources are available.
Keep detailed records of all contacts for service including direct consumer services, I&R, and community contacts.
Conduct community training and in-service when assigned.
Maintain and update the information resource file as a complete, organized and usable database of disability related services and organizations.
Conduct activities to reach un-served and underserved populations. This includes developing resources in outlining communities in the service area.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors of Sciences in Social Services or related field preferred. Experience may be substituted for education.
Life Experience with a disability is preferred or experience working with people with disabilities.

Self motivated with good verbal, written, and organizational skills.
Basic computer skills
Ability to maintain a large number of consumer files.
Ability to handle stress and work under pressure.
Must have own transportation. It is necessary to be able to travel in the service area on agency business.
Must have an understanding of commitment to the concepts and philosophy of independent living and self-determination of persons with disabilities.
Knowledge of disability issues, laws, policies and regulations.
Maintain complete confidentiality of any and all information concerning consumers and potential consumers. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL CONSTITUTE JUST CAUSE FOR IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT.

Southern 7 Health Department & Head Start – Hiring for a Head Start Teacher Aide at Metropolis Early Learning Center – This position is a Partial Year Full Time (10 months/year) position and is based at the Metropolis Early Learning Center in Metropolis, Illinois. It does come with a benefit package (including personal, and sick time accrual, holidays, health and life insurance, and an employer sponsored cafeteria plan). This position is responsible for assisting the teacher with the academic, social-emotional growth, and development of all preschool aged children in their care.

Qualifications: At a minimum the applicant must be at least 19 years of age with a CDA or enrolled in a CDA program to be completed within 2 years or an Associate Degree with at least six hours in Early Childhood; prefer an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood with experience in an early childhood setting.

Early Head Start Teacher at Metropolis Early Learning Center – This position is a full time (12 months/year) position and is based at the Metropolis Head Start in Metropolis, Illinois. It does come with a benefit package (including vacation, personal, and sick time accrual, holidays, health and life insurance, and an employer sponsored cafeteria plan). This position is responsible for providing a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate early childhood program for infants and toddlers and developing a partnership with the children’s parents or caregivers to engage and encourage parent participation in the program.

Qualifications: At a minimum the applicant must be at least 19 years of age with an Associate Degree in Early Childhood or an Associate Degree with an approved related degree with at least 18 hours in Early Childhood; prefer a Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood with experience in working with infants and toddlers.
