Humane Society Founded on Today’s Date in 1954

The Humane Society was founded on November 22, 1954 when four animal advocates came together in a Denver living room to found a new organization with a bold vision, a broad reach and a principled commitment to making the world better for animals—all animals.

The four borrowed money against their life insurance policies to fund the group’s first few months, recruited a representative group of peers for their board of directors, and made the decision that a national organization needed to be based in the nation’s capital. They resolved to build a national constituency and train their energies on the era’s greatest animal welfare challenges—the inhumane slaughter of animals raised for food, the unrestrained use of animals in research, testing and education and the tragedy of animal homelessness.

The Massac County Ministerial Alliance will have a Thanksgiving Ceremony tonight starting at 6PM. The ceremony will take place at Zion United Church of Christ. The Zion United Church of Christ is located at 1132 Country Club Rd. The speaker will be one of the ministers and the Metropolis Community Choir will be singing.

Martha’s Vineyard of Paducah in Need of Volunteers

Martha Bell, Founder of Martha’s Vineyard Mission is in need of those looking for a volunteer opportunity.   Martha’s Vineyard is located at 1100 North 12th St. Paducah and feeds the homebound and others in the community who are in need.

Martha’s Vineyard runs entirely on donations and has a Venmo account so that folks can donate right from their phone.   Martha’s Vineyard’s Venmo handle is @mvineyard40

Christmas for Kids Toy Drive – Brought to you by Metropolis Professional Firefighters L-3367, Metropolis BETA SIGMA PHI and Illinois PSI ETA

The Christmas for Kids Toy Drive will take place on Saturday December 17th from 7am until 10am at the Metropolis Community Center on west 10th Street in Metropolis.

The event is open to residents living in Massac County and is open to ages 16 and under.

An onsite registration for is provided in which the following information will be needed:

Proof of Need – Medical or Link Card Proof of Age – Birth Certificate

Proof of Residency – Driver’s License/Photo ID of Adult

Proof of Relationship of that adult to child – Must be Parent or Guardian

1634 E 5th St Metropolis – All are invited to drop off food and toys which will go to local families. Drop Offs are accepted through December 16th

Photos with Santa, Holiday Crafts, Cocoa, Tea, Coffee and Treats!
This year they will have a “Stockings for Soldiers” stuffing station and Christmas card creation station. For a $5 donation you can help stuff a stocking for our Soldiers and create a special handmade card!

The Metropolis Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest is coming up!

 

This event is open to all boys and girls willing to put their free throw skills to the test and will take place Saturday, December 10 at the Massac Co Junior High School.

 

Doors will open at 9:30am, Registration will take place from 9:30am – 10am and shooting begins at 10am.

 

Boys and Girls age groups: 8-9; 10-11; 12-13
(Contestants age groups will be determined by their age as of April 1, 2023)

 

Awards for winners & runners-up. Plus, lucky prize drawings and more!

The Harry Statham Youth Basketball League advises that there will be no HSYBL practices the week of Thanksgiving, November 21 through 25, 2022.
Games will begin Saturday, January 7, 2023.
The cheer coaches are picking their games to cheer at and will let the cheerleaders know their schedule soon also. A copy of this game schedule, the league rules and the DICK’S Sporting Goods 20% off shopping days coupon will be emailed soon to everyone who provided their email address to us during registration.
