Massac County Burn Ban in effect immediately and until further notice

The Massac County Fire Protection District has advised on Friday morning that a burn ban is in effect until further notice.
When Beau Dodson of Beau Dodson Weather joined WMOK for Coffee Break this week he spoke about the draught which has our area without measurable rain for a month as of our discussion – Hear our full conversation below:



Nominees Wanted for New Beginning’s Antique Angel Tree

WMOK recently spoke with Director Kim Abell of Massac Memorial Hospital’s New Beginnings department about their Antique Angel Tree program that’s coming up for the holiday season.

Abell told WMOK they are in need of nominations. The nominations are due by Thursday November 4.

Abell told WMOK that nominees must be: over the age of 65 and either be on a limited income, not have family close, experience difficulty with the holidays, or live alone in Massac County.

If you have a nominee, forms are available through New Beginnings and must include the name, address, phone number, gender, and age of the nominee along with their clothing size, preferred snacks, and six gifts wanted. Forms must also include the nominator’s name and phone number.

The next Metropolis City Clean Up Week for 2022 will be held the week of November 14-18. This will be the last Metropolis City Clean Up Week for the year.


The Metropolis Police Department will honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month by selling Pink Metropolis Police Department Patches to raise funds. The patches are $15.00 each. You can contact Chief Masse or stop by the police department to get a patch.  The Metropolis Police Department is located at 1020 Broadway Street in Metropolis.


The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook Statement and a Special Weather Statement for our area.

Today and Tonight Patchy frost is possible late tonight into early Saturday morning, mainly north of a line from Van Buren, Missouri to Paducah and Greenville, Kentucky.

Saturday through Thursday A widespread frost is possible Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Some locations may experience a brief light freeze. Unprotected tender vegetation could be damaged or killed.

A day to consciously address these areas at educational and religious institutions, as well as in the workplace and at home.”

We’ve begun at WMOK rolling out our listing of local Halloween and Trunk or Treat Events –

Massac County:

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2022 AT 6 PM – 9 PM – Massac County Mental Health’s Haunted Hayride – Massac County Youth Fairgrounds – 4476 Korte Rd, Metropolis.   Those attending may ride in the main wagon, drive their car or even bring their own wagon through the haunted hayride route!
All proceeds go to Massac County Mental Health community programs.
Massac County Mental Health is in need of volunteers to help with a Haunted Hayride and calls on our local 4H’ers and others to help out.  Volunteers are needed to dress up and walk around the path scaring people or to claim a space of their own to create a spooky scene. The staff at MCMH have suggestions if needed.  Please contact MCMH at (618) 926-2402 to express interest in partnering with them.

Friday, October 21 – 7P  Fall Back to Metropolis 2022 – Come out at 7pm and participate in the first annual zombie walk. Stay for shopping , a costume contest and other fun.
At 9pm Zaago’s Horror Extravaganza will be guiding everyone through an outdoor showing of the cult classic Night of the Living Dead.

Education Day Is Returning in 2022! 

History lessons will leap off the pages of the History Books and Come to Life as education day returns on October 14th, 2022.  Bring your students to experience life during the times of the French and Indian War to the early 1800’s.  Volunteer re-enactors give presentations and demonstrations making history class a little more exciting than sitting in the classroom.

Come out to support the Brookport Elementary School Bulldogs on October 18th from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at @Metropolis McDonald’s! The teachers will be serving dinner!

Joppa-Maple Grove Unit School District 38

Joppa-Maple Grove Unit School District 38 PTO is sponsoring Boo gram fundraiser. Each gram is $1. Extra forms are available though your class room teacher or the office. October 24 is the last day to order them for delivery on October 31, 2022.

Staff Sergeant Adam Locke recently spoke with WMOK about the 2nd Annual Military Appreciation Night that will take place this Friday!  

Your Massac County Patriots will take on Benton, with kick-off at 7P and the  players will be wearing their camo National Guard jerseys.

There will be free admission for all military. The American Legion Post 306 will present the colors before the game.

There will be a National Guard vehicle on display before the game and some of the players with military families will be recognized. 

Join us on your radio  on Friday night as your Massac County Patriots  take on Benton and it will be Military Appreciation Night. Kickoff is at 7pm.

Join WMOK at 6:30 on Friday  as we get things started with Angie Lockard and Super Country Favorites – followed by WMOK’s Sawyer and Prevallet with coverage of the game!
