Joppa-Maple Grove/Massac Annexation Issue Passed by Regional Board of School Trustees – Voters in Both Taxing Districts will Make the Final Decision in the April Consolidated Election

Yesterday evening the Regional Board of School Trustees conducted an Annexation Hearing regarding the petition that was filed on June 27, 2022, by the Board of Education of Joppa-Maple Grove Unit District #38 asking for the annexation of Joppa-Maple Grove Unit District #38 into Massac County Unit District #1 and dissolving Joppa-Maple Grove Unit District #38.

Testimony was heard from supporters and those in opposition of the annexation. Public comments were heard.

The Board of Trustees approved the petition to place the question of annexation of Joppa-Maple Grove Unit 38 by Massac Unit 1 on the ballot at the next consolidated election currently scheduled for April 4, 2023.

The question of annexation will now go to the voters in both taxing districts (Joppa-Maple Grove & Massac Unit 1).

If the referendum passes in both districts, the annexation will move forward no sooner than the 2024/2025 school year.

If the referendum fails to pass in either district, the issue dies and both districts continue to operate as they are now.

Today is National Taco Day!  Today is a day for tacos! There is some evidence that tacos with small fish were eaten in the Valley of Mexico before Spaniards arrived to the continent. In the 18th century Mexican silver miners used “plugs” or “wads”—paper wrappers with gunpowder fillings—to extract ore, and these were also called tacos. Tacos likely got their modern name because they resembled the explosives. Tacos usually consist of a protein such as beef, chicken, pork, or fish, wrapped in a hard or soft shell made of corn or flour. Toppings may include tomatoes, onion, lettuce, cheese, refried beans, cilantro, salsa, sour cream, or guacamole.

Moose back on the loose after rescuers free it from fence

BARKHAMSTED, Conn. (AP) — A moose is back on the loose in Connecticut after some quick-acting rescuers helped to free it from a fence.

The Connecticut State Environmental Police received a call at around midnight about a moose stuck in Barkhamsted, northwest of Hartford. Local fire department personnel and state police responded early Saturday to find the animal not impaled on the structure but unable to get its belly and rear legs over the top.

They cut off and removed one end of a panel of the fence and that allowed the moose to push the remaining part to the ground and walk through.

The rescue came on the heels of several recent sightings in the state that prompted the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection issued an advisory to motorists last week to be on the lookout for moose.

There are only about 100 moose in Connecticut, according to DEEP, but they become more active during their breeding season in September and October.
