Chief Harry Masse Discusses Saturday Night Metropolis Shooting with WMOK

/ WMOK

(WMOK – Metropolis, IL) Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse joined WMOK for our regularly scheduled Coffee Break on Wednesday morning.  First up among several topics – a Saturday Night Shooting in Metropolis –  which resulted in the victim being airlifted to an out of state hospital and the offender in an out of state hospital following a drug overdose.

Shortly before 11pm on Saturday night Metropolis Police dispatch received a call of shots fired in the 400 block of W. 20th Street.   The Preliminary Investigation revealed that a 33 year old male from Wickliffe Ky had gone to a residence in the 400 block of W. 20th to purchase an item that was for sale. For reasons unknown at this time, an altercation ensued and the victim decided not to purchase the item.  As the victim was leaving in a 2002 Chevrolet SUV he was shot by the offender, a 59 year old female.

Metropolis Officers with the assistance of the Massac County Sheriff’s Deputies secured the perimeter until the IL State Police District 22, IL State Police SWAT and a negotiator arrived on the scene as the offender would not answer the door.  When entry was made into the residence around 8:00 am on Sunday  the offender was located and appeared to have overdosed on pills.

WMOK spoke with a Metropolis resident who encountered the situation while on his way to Sonic.  Gage Hornback told WMOK that while traveling on 20th street he saw a vehicle ahead swerving and driving through a yard.  When he slowed his own vehicle to navigate the situation the victim approached his vehicle and told him that he had been shot and he needed to get to the hospital and to call his wife.

Hornback told the victim to get in the vehicle and with hazard lights on drove him to Massac Memorial Hospital and helped him in to the Emergency Room.

Hornback said it was a very intense situation as the man was telling him things to tell his wife and family in case he didn’t make it.

Unsure of what to do after such an instance, Hornback went to the Metropolis Police Department to advise them of what had happened.

When Masse joined WMOK he told us that he did want to squash rumors and confirm that the victim and offender were known to one another.

Masse reminds the public that this in an open investigation and they do have a suspect.  He went on to discuss warrants and extradition procedures that will need to take place as the process continues.   He gave high accolades to the Massac County Sheriff’s Department who assisted in securing the area as the events unfolded.

Masse also gave Kudos to the good Samaritan who took the victim to the hospital after encountering him on West 20th street saying, “Once again our little community steps up”.

Masse went on to discuss local crime and told WMOK that this is the fourth shooting to happen in Metropolis since he became Police Chief in 2011.
