Saturday Night Shooting in Metropolis Leaves Two Hospitalized

Shortly before 11pm on Saturday night Metropolis Police dispatch received a call of shots fired in the 400 block of W. 20th Street.

While responding, officers were notified that a gunshot victim had arrived at Massac Memorial Hospital.

Preliminary Investigation revealed that a 33 year old male from Wickliffe Ky had gone to a residence in the 400 block of W. 20th to purchase an item that was for sale. For reasons unknown at this time, an altercation ensued and the victim decided not to purchase the item.

As the victim was leaving in a 2002 Chevrolet SUV he was shot by the offender, a 59 year old female.

Officers attempted to make contact with the offender but she would not answer the door.

Metropolis Officers with the assistance of the Massac County Sheriff’s Deputies secured the perimeter until the IL State Police District 22, IL State Police SWAT and a negotiator arrived on the scene.

Entry was made into the residence around 8:00 am on Sunday at which time the offender was located and appeared to have overdosed on pills.
She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Massac County State’s Attorney Josh Stratmeyer was contacted. He secured warrants and charges are pending, Investigation is ongoing.

WMOK spoke with Metropolis Police Department Chief and Director of Public Safety Harry Masse  this morning via text and he has advised that there is no threat to the community.

Chief Masse said that the shooting victim was flown to out of state hospital. The offender is also in the hospital.

WMOK has now spoken with a Metropolis resident who encountered the situation while on his way to Sonic.  Gage Hornback told WMOK that while traveling on 20th street he saw a vehicle ahead swerving and driving through a yard.  When he slowed his own vehicle to navigate the situation the victim approached his vehicle and told him that he had been shot and he needed to get to the hospital and to call his wife.

Hornback told the victim to get in the vehicle and with hazard lights on drove him to Massac Memorial Hospital and helped him in to the Emergency Room.

Hornback said it was a very intense situation as the man was telling him things to tell his wife and family in case he didn’t make it.

Unsure of what to do after such an instance, Hornback went to the Metropolis Police Department to advise them of what had happened.

Chief Masse joins WMOK on Wednesday of this week for his regularly scheduled Coffee Break.

Today is Family Day! Family Day, created by the Center on Addiction, focuses on getting parents to do things with their children so that connections that create sustaining strong relationships are made, in order to help prevent teen drug use. Small things like eating meals together, playing games together, and asking children about their day can do much to build strong relationships. Connections should be made at a young age, as it is difficult to begin making connections with children who are already in their teenage years.

Kentucky man who shot classmates in ’97 imprisoned for life

(AP – Paducah, KY) A Kentucky man who killed three fellow students and wounded five others when he was 14 years old will have to spend the rest of his life in prison without another opportunity to seek parole, the Kentucky Parole Board voted Monday.

Michael Carneal, now 39, told parole board members last week that he would live with his parents and continue his mental health treatment if they agreed to release him. He admitted that he still hears voices like the ones that told him to steal a neighbor’s pistol and fire it into the crowded lobby of Heath High School in 1997. However, Carneal said that with therapy and medication, he has learned to control his behavior.

The board, meeting in Frankfort, voted 7-0 to deny parole, after deliberating in private for about 30 minutes. Carneal watched the vote over Zoom from the Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange. He sat hunched in a small chair as Kentucky Parole Board Chair Ladeidra Jones asked each member for their vote.
