/ WMOK

Massac County School Superintendent Jason Hayes joined WMOK Wednesday morning for Coffee Break.  First on our list of topics – the current state of the Massac County – Joppa High School Annexation issue.

Mr Hayes told WMOK that the resolution has been passed by both Massac and Joppa School boards.  The Massac County Unit #1 School Board passed the resolution at the August meeting which can be viewed below:

During the meeting Hayes read a letter he had received from Joppa School Board President Danny Burnett.  That letter is included in its’ entirety below:

The next step is the approval of the Regional Office of Education.  Hayes explains further the approval process in the audio file below.   Should the resolution be approved by all entities the issue of annexation will appear on the ballot for Massac County Voters.

The topic has come to the table following a feasibility study to look further at the combining of Massac Unit #1 and Joppa-Maple Grove Unit #38. The feasibility study was performed by Midwest School Consultants: Dr. William H. Phillips, Dr. Scott L. Day, Dr. Leonard R. Bogle, and Ms. Lisa Schuenke. The study was presented to both School Boards on June 9, 2022 at Shawnee Community College. The team reviewed their findings in the following presentation linked below. The full complete feasibility study is also linked below.
