The Brookport Bridge will be closed today from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. for a walk-through inspection of the bridge structure and various maintenance activities – keep in mind that pavement patching is taking place in the overnight hours on portions of I-24 therefore some of those Lanes remain restricted.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans a daytime closure of the U.S. 45 Ohio River “Brookport” Bridge on Thursday, April 28, 2022.

The U.S. 45 Ohio River “Brookport” Bridge will be closed from 9 a.m., CDT, to approximately 1 p.m., to allow a walk-through inspection of the bridge structure and various maintenance activities along the approaches and bridge deck.

KYTC District 1 will attempt to provide timely notice should the work be completed earlier than expected.

As a reminder, the bridge has a 15-ton load limit. Due to deck width, it is restricted to vehicles no more than 8 feet wide and has a 9 ft. 6 in. vehicle height restriction, which prohibits most motor homes, most commercial trucks, and prohibits all STAA Trucks. Farm equipment and permitted loads of any kind are prohibited from crossing the structure.

Also known as the Brookport Bridge and the Irvin S. Cobb Bridge, the U.S. 45 Ohio River Bridge is at McCracken County mile point 12.882.

The 10-span bridge carries approximately 4,200 vehicles across the Ohio River each day between Paducah, KY, and Brookport, IL.

The 5,385 ft. structure at Ohio River navigation mile point 937.3 was opened to traffic in 1929.

All Kentucky bridges get a detailed inspection every two years with long-span lane and river bridges getting an additional walk-through safety inspection annually.

City National Bank in Metropolis has SPOOFING ALERT: Customers have received spoofed calls appearing to be from City National Bank. Recently, we have heard from CNB customers who have received phone calls appearing to be from CNB on their caller ID. Luckily the customers realized the phone call was a scam and did not give out their debit card or personal information that the fraudsters were asking for.
Stay Alert! Stay Vigilant! Fraudsters are using software to mask their real identities. Spoofing scams, whether it be caller Id or email spoofing, can happen at any time to anybody. Criminals will use falsified information in an attempt to gain access to your personal information and money. You cannot always trust your caller ID display, so it’s important to be vigilant for any signs that you could be falling for a spoofing scam.

Today is National Superhero Day! National Superhero Day is for honoring both fictional superheroes and real-life superheroes—those who risk their lives to keep others safe. Both of these heroes are role models for children, and even for adults. The day was thought up by employees of Marvel Comics in 1995.

There are a countless number of fictional superheroes who are honored on the day, such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Spiderman. But as a common phrase says, “not all heroes wear capes.” Real-life heroes put themselves in harm’s way, and in circumstances where they may risk their lives for others, just as their fictional counterparts do. Some of these heroes have careers that put them into these scenarios, such as members of law enforcement, military personnel, and firefighters. Other heroes may be everyday citizens who step up in moments of crisis and do extraordinary things. Other everyday people may not risk their lives, but may dress up as superheroes and help others on a daily basis. People from some charities, such as Love Your Melon, dress up as superheroes on the day and visit children’s hospitals.

Today is International Pay It Forward! The concept of “pay it forward” is nothing new. The phrase may first have appeared in print in 1916, in the book In the Garden of Delight, although the concept goes back much further. Since 2007, there has been a yearly event devoted to it. International Pay it Forward Day is a “global initiative that exists to make a difference by creating a huge ripple of kindness felt across the world.” Each year, people in over 80 countries participate by performing over 10 million acts of kindness. When small acts of kindness and giving are performed by millions of people, there is a potential for the world to be changed for the better, which is the ultimate goal of Pay it Forward Day.

Australia’s Blake Beattie created the day, being inspired by Catherine Ryan Hyde’s book Pay It Forward, which was published in 1999 and adapted into a feature film the following year. Pay it Forward Day was first held in 2007, and by its second year was being marked by people in five countries. By the fifth year, people in 35 countries were celebrating and there had been seven state proclamations and fifteen city proclamations. By 2017, people in over 80 countries were celebrating each year, and over 100 city and state proclamations had been made in honor of the day.
