Police Presence and Increased Student Supervision at Massac County Schools on Friday in Response to Tik Tok Threat

/ WMOK

WMOK is in contact with Massac Unit School District #1 Superintendent, Jason Hayes this morning regarding a Tik Tok threat aimed at schools across the country.

The threat, or “challenge,” as some have referred to it, reportedly calls on students to commit acts of violence on Dec. 17.

According to national news outlets, the threat labeled December 17, “National Shoot Up Your School Day,” does not name a specific school or district.

Hayes told WMOK, “I worked with the local law enforcement yesterday to increase their presence simply as a precautionary measure. I informed the staff as well to increase their student supervision today in all our schools.”

Massac Unit School District #1 received the following message yesterday from School Safety Intelligence Officer at the Statewide Terrorism & Intelligence Center:

“The Statewide Terrorism & Intelligence Center has been made aware of a threat circulating TikTok stating “school shootings and bomb threats for every school in the USA even elementary” on Friday, December 17th, 2021. Several states have reported this threat has been circulating through their school districts.

At this time, the STIC currently has no specific information concerning any threats or attacks planned at Illinois schools. Law enforcement and school officials are encouraged to remain vigilant and report all suspicious behavior. Suspicious incidents should be reported immediately to local law enforcement.”

WMOK spoke with both Chief Harry Masse of the Metropolis Police Department and Sheriff Chad Kaylor of the Massac County Sheriff’s Department this morning regarding the threat.  Both advised WMOK that they were aware of the threat and there will be a police presence today at Massac County Schools.
