After a long wait due to the Covid-19 pandemic Metropolis Public Safety Director, Chief Harry Masse announced over the weekend that two new recruits have graduated from the academy and will begin field training on Monday, December 6th in Metropolis.
Officers Jay Joiner and Christian Cepeda graduated from the academy on Friday.
A third new officer, John Suggs is currently taking part in his Field Training and Chief Masse expects that he will be working the streets of Metropolis after the first of the year.
Chief Masse told WMOK that by Springtime the new graduates will be on the streets as well.
Chief Masse also advised that there is still a slot open on the Metropolis Police Department for a new officer. He hopes to recruit an officer who is already certified – but he does have a slot reserved in the January academy in the event that it is needed.
The comradery and partnerships between our local law enforcement agencies have been a benefit during the shortage. Chief Masse said, “The Sheriff is a firm believer in partnerships like I am.” He went on to express that there are a lot of times dispatch doesn’t even have to call for assistance – one department or the other will hear that the other may need assistance and they’ll “head that way”.
Masse expects that by the Summer the Metropolis Police Department will be operating at full strength.
