Massac County Students Return for A Full School Day Monday, August 16

/ WMOK

Massac County Unit #1 students will return to school on Monday, August 16th with full school days. There will be a 2pm dismissal on Monday.

The Back to School Plan will be finalized at a special school board meeting which will take place this afternoon. It was amended to accommodate the mandate regarding universal masking indoors at Illinois schools.

Mr. Hayes advised recently that he realizes the masks are a polarizing issue and stated that he has had parents express concerns from both viewpoints – however he has remained in close contact with Dr. Jonathan Walters of Massac Memorial Hospital as well as the Southern Seven Health Department and the fact is that the numbers are going up.

He hopes that folks can remain patient as he is optimistic that this will not be a long-term mask mandate.

Hayes told WMOK that if Massac County schools ignored the mandate that two-thirds of school funding could be lost, which results in approximately sixteen million dollars.

Mr. Hayes will join WMOK for Coffee Break tomorrow morning – Wednesday August 11 – to discuss the amended plan and procedures that will be in place for the new school year.
