The Superman Celebration – usually held in June will begin this Friday, July 30. The Superman Celebration was cancelled in 2020 and delayed this year due to the pandemic.
Greater Metropolis Convention and Visitors Bureau Director, Trish Steckenrider told WMOK that planning for the Superman Celebration generally begins in November – however as November arrived we remained under Covid-19 mitigations in Illinois with an elevated number of cases and no immediate end in sight. Upon looking ahead it was determined that it would be best to attempt a later date for the Superman Celebration.
A couple of changes will be noticed this year by attendees: the celebration will begin on Friday rather than Thursday and due to scheduling issues there will be no rides at this year’s Superman Celebration. Steckenrider said aside from those changes – this will be much like our Superman Celebrations of the past.
Metropolis Director of Public Safety, Chief Harry Masse told WMOK that the Market Street area will be blocked to vehicle traffic beginning Thursday so that preparations may be made for vendors and attendees.
