/ WMOK

Approaching the June 11th lift in state-wide Covid-19 mitigations numbers had declined considerably in the Southern Seven region – recording case numbers in the single digits daily across the entire region.

June 10th marked the first day with no new Covid-19 cases reported in the Southern Seven Region since April 1, 2020 when the first case was reported in our region – however reported cases rose over 200% in early July – going from a hand full of new cases in the weekly report to forty new cases (week preceding 7/02/21 ) and then forty-nine cases (week preceding 7/09/21 ).

The Southern Seven Health department again recommends that those who have not been vaccinated do so.  Shawnna Rhine of the Southern Seven Health Department advised WMOK that vaccination numbers in the Southern Seven counties are low – hovering in the mid-20% range.

Though the mobile clinic dates have ended, Shanna told WMOK that folks can still get the Covid-19 vaccine from the Southern Seven Health Department.  Vaccine appointments can be scheduled at any of the Southern Seven Health Department locations.  Shawnna suggests calling your S7HD location before arriving for the vaccination as that will allow them time to thaw the vaccine before you arrive and should save you a few minutes.

Rhine addressed the concern of some that the Covid-19 vaccine has not yet been FDA approved and reminds folks that it has been approved for Emergency Authorization which indicates that the testing is proving to be effective.

Rhine also discussed the Delta Variant which is about 60% more transmissible that the original alpha variant Covid-19.  Rhine advised that the Delta variant is showing up heavily in a younger population as that age group is not as vaccinated as older age groups.

Rhine told WMOK that 14-15% of new cases in the state of Illinois are Delta variant cases and while there are currently no cases of the Delta variant in our Southern Seven region – the number of Delta variant cases in Missouri is concerning.  In Missouri 73%-74% of new cases are the Delta variant.

To schedule a Covid-19 Vaccine you can call the Southern Seven Health Department at (618) 634-2297.
